Waste Management in Salt Lake City

The issue of waste will be tackled at the Climate Change Carnival with two games and an artificial turf performance area.

The “Wheel of Waste,” showcases a huge spinning wheel, similar to “Wheel of Fortune,” where students can spin and answer questions about living sustainably in exchange for prizes. After an initial free spin, participants may earn a second spin if they can point to how they are already supporting sustainable living practices, such as using a reusable water bottle or using mass transit to commute.

The “Fishing for Trash” game lures students and faculty into fishing for different kinds of refuse. Participants will sort their “catch” into garbage, recycling or compost. Prizes for both games will support sustainable living practices.

Lastly, the waste team will perform “Sweeping It Under the Rug,” using a large artificial turf rug and giant broom to loudly call out climate change problems throughout the carnival, then symbolically and ironically, sweep the issues under the plastic rug.

The Waste Team includes: Kelcie Bird, Natalie Cheatham, Kelly Goff and Emma Wood

Game Rules

“Wheel of Waste”

This is a spinning wheel game similar to the Wheel of Fortune. The participants can spin and answer questions about waste and living sustainably in exchange for prizes. Here are the rules:

1. Every Participant will get one free spin.

2. The Participant will spin the wheel. Participants will then have to answer a question about sustainability that will be categorized based on the color the wheel lands on.

3. The Participant will answer the question. If they get it correct they will receive a prize.

4. The Participant is allowed to choose their prize.

5. Participants can earn a second spin if they are already supporting sustainable living, such as using a reusable water bottle, taking sustainable transport such as the bus/trax/bike/walking to school, or something similarly ecofriendly. They can also give an ecofact to try to receive the prize.

“Fishing for Trash”

For this game, there will be a curtain set up and fishing poles for the participants to use. They will fish for different kinds of prizes that in actuality will be trash that can then be sorted into garbage, recycling, and compost. The trash will be sorted into 5 gallon buckets and removed at the end of the event and recycled. If they sort the trash correctly, they get a prize. Here are the rules:

1. The Participant will grab a fishing pole, and throw the line over the curtain. When they reel it in there will be a piece of trash attached, that will have been attached to the line by one of the people running the station.

2. The Participant will have to put the waste in the correct bucket. Either garbage, compost, or recycling.

3. If they put the waste in the correct bin they will get a prize.

4. If they get it incorrect they will have one more chance to put it in the correct bucket to receive a prize.
