Join the Buzz is an event by the Honors Class: Art, Action, & the Environment at the University of Utah taught by Professor Wendy Wischer and comprised of students from Nursing, Engineering, Gender Studies, English, Psychology and Computer Science. In collaboration with the U of U Beekeeping students, this event is designed to bring awareness to the new Green Infrastructure and Pollinator Garden project being installed this spring on campus, as well as to inform members of the University of Utah community about the importance of pollinators.

Why Pollinators Matter
Pollinators maintain the diversity of the
ecosystems around us.Pollinators maintain the
diversity of the ecosystems around us.
For a large majority of flowering plants,
pollinators are absolutely necessary to carry on the
existence of the species. Without pollinators, our
biodiversity is at risk! It is our responsibility to
provide a safe and healthy environment for
them to continue to do the same.

Why Are They Dying?
40% of pollinator species are facing
extinction. Some threats to these species
include habitat loss, insecticides, parasites,
climate change, and inbreeding depression.
What Can You Do?
Build your own pollinator
habitat! Here’s how:
1. Using untreated wood,
design what you want
your habitat to look like!
2. Fill your design with
bamboo rods at least 8-
10 inches long.
3. Drill holes into your
habitat for your
pollinators to access the
space.
4. Position your habitat in
a place where it is safe
from predators and
weather conditions.
Pollinators love open,
sunny spaces, as well as
a large variety of plant
life!
