Loss of snowpack

What is snowpack?

Snowpack is the accumulation of snow that stays on the ground throughout the winter months.

Why is it important?

There are many reasons that snowpack is important. First, it is a vital freshwater source that feeds into lakes and streams once it melts.

Second, the layers of powdery snow are highly sought after by skiers and snowboarders. This is important for Utah’s economy, as skiing and snowboarding account for roughly         $1 billion every year.

Lake Effect

Lake effect snow accounts for ~5-8% of our snow every year. It seems insignificant but it equals between 30-50″ a year. This much snow not only represents a loss to those recreating, but can total between $33.8 million to $81.9 million in lost revenue from tourism. Lake Effect snow is among the fluffiest and driest of snows making Utah famous for the greatest snow on earth.
